Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Before the commencement of the study, approval was obtained from the community leaders, Ministry of Health and Child Care provincial and district directorate in the area. Ethical clearance of the study was sought from the Joint Research Ethics Committee (JREC) for the University of Zimbabwe, College of Health Sciences and the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals (JREC/251/16). Ethical approval was also sought from the national ethical review board, the Medical Research Council of Zimbabwe (MRCZ) (MRCZ/A/2149). Communities were mobilized and sensitized about the nature of the study and study objectives in local language. Written informed consent was sought from mothers/caregivers for the enrolment of their children into the study. Participation was entirely voluntary, only participants with signed consent forms were enrolled into the study and they were free to withdraw at any time point.
