Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The study protocol received ethical approval from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) Scientific and Ethics Review Unit (SERU) (SSC Protocol No. 2675), as part of Integrated Vector Management (IVM) for Sustainable Malaria Control in Eastern Africa (Ref: KEMRI/RES/7/3/1). Additional approval was provided by the appropriate ministries of health in Kenya and Ethiopia. At household level, approval was provided by the house owner. At school, parental consent was based on passive opt-out consent rather than written opt-in consent owing to the low risk and routine nature of the survey procedure. Child individual assent was obtained before participation in the surveys.
