: This study has been approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland: RCPI RECSAF 48.The approach adopted for obtaining consent from people with dementia/moderate to severe cognitive impairment for this study is ‘process consent’ [CitationRef removed], which involves five parts: background and preparation, establishing a basis for capacity, initial consent, ongoing consent and monitoring, and support. Consent is obtained at a face-to-face meeting (most likely at the person’s home) and is sought separately from persons with dementia and family carers. Written consent was obtained from carers who participated in the study. People with dementia provided written consent where possible, or provided verbal consent and assent.
