: Hofstra University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved the research conducted in this study under Exempt Review procedures on October 22, 2018. Exemption status was granted per the US Code of Federal Regulations 45CFR46.101(b)(2). [CitationRef removed].Per 45CFR46.101, exempt status is granted for research “conducted in established or commonly accepted educational settings that specifically involves normal educational practices that are not likely to adversely impact students’ opportunity to learn required educational content or the assessment of educators who provide instruction. This includes most research on regular and special education instructional strategies, and research on the effectiveness of or the comparison among instructional techniques, curricula, or classroom management methods”. Additionally research that includes “interactions involving educational tests (cognitive, diagnostic, aptitude, achievement), survey procedures, interview procedures, or observation of public behavior (including visual or auditory recording) in which “the information obtained is recorded by the investigator in such a manner that the identity of the human subjects cannot readily be ascertained, directly or through identifiers linked to the subjects” or “any disclosure of the human subjects’ responses outside the research would not reasonably place the subjects at risk of criminal or civil liability or be damaging to the subjects’ financial standing, employability, educational advancement, or reputation” can be granted exempt status.Research exempt under 45CFR46.101 is also exempt from informed consent as described under §46.116 and for documentation of consent under §46.117. However, all students in the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine class of 2021 consented in writing upon matriculation to release their grades for medical education research.
