Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical clearance was obtained from the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital Ethics Committee (ESUTHEC) with reference number ESUT/EC/13/145. Before recruitment of each subject, written informed consent was obtained from every mother or caregiver whose baby had severe hyperbilirubinaemia as was indicated in the research proposal submitted to ESUTHEC. Participation in the study was entirely voluntary, and no financial inducement whatsoever was involved. Participants were informed that voluntary withdrawal at any stage of interaction was guaranteed for them without any adverse effect to the mother or their baby. All information was handled with strict confidentiality.
