Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Our study has been granted an exemption from the Peking University Institutional Review Board (PUIRB) (No. IRB00001052–16011) as we used only anonymous data that cannot be tracked to any individual. The data were authorized by the National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China. The data source of our study, “Monitoring Data of Chinese Migrants,” is an annual sampling survey conducted by the National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China since 2009. The purpose of the survey is to evaluate the situation and demands of migrants to provide more information to policy-makers. Because it was an administrative survey approved by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, instead of a scientific research survey, and there would be no potential harm to the participants, ethics approval and consent to participate was exempted after consulting with PUIRB. Nonetheless, the participants were clearly informed in writing that there would be no potential harm to them and that data obtained could be used and made public under anonymity.
