: For the current study the virus isolates obtained for this publication were isolated from participants of prospective cohort studies which ethical approval has been obtained from Institutional Review Boards: the Comité Institucional de Revisión Ética (CIRE) in the Centro Nacional de Diagnóstico y Referencia of the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health and the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS) of the University of California, Berkeley. Written informed consent was obtained from a parent or guardian, or if the guardian was illiterate, the consent form was read aloud in the presence of a witness and the guardian’s thumbprint was obtained in lieu of a signature, as approved by the Institutional Review Boards: the Comité Institucional de Revisión Ética (CIRE) in the Centro Nacional de Diagnóstico y Referencia of the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health and the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS) of the University of California, Berkeley. Verbal assent was obtained from all children aged 6 years and older. All experiments were performed in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations.
