Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Sampling complied with the legal regulations of the respective countries (research permit: RPGS/R/AS/11/2017; export permit AS/A/1; ethical approval: ref. 163–12). Samples utilised in the study have been lawfully acquired and were collected prior to The Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from Their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity has been ratified in Tanzania. Except for voucher specimens, fish were not killed for the purpose of this study - sampling was performed by clipping a small piece of caudal fin that has rapid regenerating capability. Voucher specimens were killed by overdose of anaesthetics (clove oil), following approved protocol (ref. 163–12).
